New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS)
The mission of The New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS) is to halt the spread of HIV in Nigeria by ensuring the availability of safe, effective, acceptable and affordable HIV vaccine and microbicide products for all Nigerians when developed. It advocates and promotes a socially response public health that addresses the needs of key and vulnerable populations to HIV: and indirectly improve their access to health and health products. It launched its HIV Prevention Advocacy Academy in December 2014. With support of USAID/CASPR/AVAC, it commenced the training of young advocates in 2017 with the aim of advocating for socially responsive policies and programmes that promotes biomedical HIV prevention research and programmes in Nigeria.
This session shall specifically address the aspect of inclusivity, equity and diversity in public health education and practice. Dr O Ezechi (Director, Clinical Service, National Institute of Medical Research) shall discuss inclusivity in terms of ethnic, cultural and religious sensitivity with public health education curriculum development, and public health practices at the primary, secondary and tertiary health levels.
Dr Mejuini (Director, Centre for Gender Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) shall raise the issue of gender equity in all spheres of planning, implementation and training of public health practitioners and public health delivery in Nigeria. Dr Mapayi (Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife) shall highlight the importance of diversity – sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, race – in all its ramification in a world of globalized public health practice and response; and the implications for training and practice.
